UPDATED with availability and rough price positioning
A great spot by @Fleak – Viz has announced an MXF playback plugin for Final Cut Pro X. Lots of different files supported.
We only know as much as the web page and could this be anything to do with the mysterious Hamburg PRO Media story?
Anyway, really good news that there is a robust MXF plugin for FCPX on the market. Another piece of the emerging FCPX in broadcast market.
A new plugin developed by Vizrt and nablet allows Apple Final Cut Pro X and 7 to playback MXF-files natively.
Vizrt, a leading provider of content production systems for the digital media industry, together with nablet GmbH, a specialist in automated content recognition and video codecs, today announced a new MXF plugin for Final Cut Pro X. The plugin, to be demonstrated at IBC 2014 on the Vizrt booth (hall 7 booth A10) and nablet booth (hall 7 booth G05), allows both Apple Final Cut Pro X and 7 to playback MXF-files natively.
“Several broadcasters who are using Final Cut Pro with Viz One have requested MXF playback. Existing plugins on the market that offer MXF playback have not met our customers’ technical and commercial demands, so together with nablet we decided to build a plugin to address them, and enable the use of MXF inside Final Cut Pro X,” said Petter Ole Jakobsen, CTO of Vizrt.
“Together with Vizrt we have developed a plugin that supports the most common standard file formats currently used in broadcast production and we will continue to add more features and formats support to it,” said Muzaffer Beygirci, CEO of nablet GmbH.
The first version of the nablet-Vizrt MXF plugin supports XDCAM IMX, XDCAM HD,
MXF Op1-a DV, MXF Op1-a DVCPRO, MXF Op1-a DVCPRO HD, as well as, MXF Op1-a AVC-Intra 50 and 100. The plugin supports playback of growing files (edit during ingest) and also includes a built-in AES331m to PCM decoder.
“We have worked with nablet GmbH on several video-related projects and they are an excellent partner with deep insight into video codecs and wrappers,” added Jakobsen, while Muzaffer Beygirci concluded
Well we headed over to the Vizrt stand and got a demo of the FCPX plugin in action. It’s a quick install of an application that provides the MXF reading functionality and it also doubles as a basic standalone player that will open if you double click a file.
We asked product manager Oscar Tengwall about cost and he replied “It will be very, very competitively priced.” With the removal of the Hamburg Pro Media equivalent, this is good news and certainly one to watch. Expect the plugin to be available in a couple of weeks.
Interest in the MXF plugin on the stand. Note FCPX running on the right hand side screen.
